The Wright trade was a solid piece of business, one that converted two players who were unlikely to play much into one of the best backup point guards in basketball. Otherwise, most of the work happened around the edges.

Extending Kevin Huerter would seem to be the next domino on that pathway. While it makes the team more expensive, it is firmly in the category of “rich people problems” at this point. Importantly, Atlanta got fair value on all three deals, including stopping short of a max on Collins. Did not re-sign PG Brandon Goodwin or PF Nathan KnightĪtlanta locked in its core by extending Young and Capela and re-signing Collins all five starters are signed through 2023.

Led by Young’s assorted stop-starts and other tricks to earn three-shot fouls, the Hawks had the NBA’s highest free throw rate and very nearly the highest percentage. Instead, the Hawks profited offensively the old-fashioned Mike Woodson era way by taking more shots than their opponents and generating a zillion free throws. Atlanta had a below-average 3-point rate and was 12th in accuracy, even with Young and other shooters.

Offensively, the biggest surprise was what an ordinary shooting team this turned out to be. The Hawks won 10 postseason games because they defended at a much higher level than at any point in the Trae Young era. The playoffs also reflected a Hawks team that was more on-point at that end, notably when they blanketed New York’s Julius Randle in the first round. Atlanta was 23rd in defense in the first 34 games and improved to 12th over the final 38. However, some of the changes under McMillan were genuine. Atlanta had a neutral point differential at the time and was more or less treading water despite injuries to Bogdan Bogdanović, De’Andre Hunter and Danilo Gallinari. That was likely a factor, yes, but a lot of signs of the team’s quality were already there, even with the 14-20 record. The narrative on that turnaround is a little jumbled, credited mostly to the replacement of Lloyd Pierce with Nate McMillan.
